Behind the Scenes of the Publishing Industry
July 20, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm UTC+8
Do you want to get a sneak peek behind the scenes of the publishing industry? What goes through agents heads when your manuscript lands on their doorstop? How much do you have to worry about publishing trends? What are the pros and cons of self-publishing, traditional publishing and electronic publishing? And what truly makes a great piece of writing?
Join us for the UWRF x Outpost Booktalk series, and hear industry insiders Donica Bettanin and Fiona Barrows in conversation.
DONICA BETTANIN is the international program consultant for the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival. She worked in independent publishing and as a literary agent before specializing in literary programming. She has programmed and produced events for the Wheeler Centre in Melbourne and Lit Crawl NYC and the PEN World Voices Festival in New York City.
FIONA BARROWS spent six years working at a London literary agency. In that time, she read almost every single submission made to the company, sifting through reams of emails in search of those often illusive rough diamonds. She lunched with editors at the top UK publishing houses, finding out exactly what was working and what they were looking to find.
Since leaving London and the publishing industry eighteen months ago, she has turned her dedication to words into creative copywriting, helping entrepreneurs articulate their vision, capture attention, and sell their wares.
UBUD WRITERS & READERS FESTIVAL
Held annually in Ubud, the Ubud Writers & Readers Festival is Southeast Asia’s leading festival of words and ideas. The UWRF celebrates extraordinary stories and amplifies brave voices, tackles global issues and bold ideas.
The Festival unites Indonesian and international writers, speakers, artists, advocates, activists and thought-leaders for five days of ambitious programming spanning author talks, panel debates, in-depth conversations, literary lunches, twilight music and arts performances, film screenings, poetry slams, street parties, cultural master-classes, book launches and much more.
The 13th UWRF will be held 26–30 October, 2016, celebrating the theme Tvat Tvam Asi or ‘I am you, you are me’. This powerful Hindu ideology is crucial to the collective identity of Indonesia – uniting people from incredibly diverse religious, ethnic, cultural and historical backgrounds to share common respect and understanding.
The 2016 program will interrogate what it means to be human in the 21st century and beyond: what unites us and what divides us? What is the meaning of country, home, borders, punishment, care, environmental and social responsibility and sustainability, fact and truth?
Program sneak peak launch on July 18, with Early Bird tickets to follow on July 27th. Be a part of #UWRF2016.
